Child Education Funding Gap Calculator

Use your own numbers to estimate a future education cost, projected funding and the possible gap. The result is an illustration, not a prediction.

No return or inflation rate is pre-filled. Use assumptions you are comfortable testing.

How this calculator works

This calculator compares an estimated future education cost with the money you have already set aside and the amount you add each month.

It shows how much money you may have, how much of the goal that may cover, and how much you may still be short. The percentage is not a chance of success.

How the calculation is done

The future education cost is calculated from today's cost, the number of years and your education-cost inflation assumption.

Your existing savings are projected using the annual growth assumption. Monthly amounts are treated as being added at the end of each month. The annual growth rate is converted to an equivalent monthly rate for this calculation.

The calculator adds the estimated value of your current savings and monthly amounts. If this is below the estimated education cost, it shows how much you may still be short. If it is above the cost, it shows the extra amount.

Why we show two other cases

Long-term numbers can change. So we also show two simple cases: education cost rising faster, and your money growing slower.

These are only examples to help you see how the result can change. They are not forecasts.

See a simple example

Suppose an education goal costs ₹25 lakh today and the money is needed after 15 years. At 7% education-cost inflation, the estimated future cost is about ₹69 lakh.

If ₹3 lakh is already set aside and ₹10,000 is added each month, an 8% annual growth assumption gives projected funding of about ₹43.3 lakh. That is about 63% of the estimated goal, leaving a funding gap of about ₹25.7 lakh. Under the same time and growth assumption, filling only that calculated gap works out to roughly ₹7,600 more per month.

These example numbers only explain the calculation. They are not suggested inflation, return or contribution rates.

Important things to remember

Future education costs and investment growth are uncertain. Try more than one assumption instead of treating one result as fixed.

This calculator is for financial education and general calculation. It does not recommend any investment, product, security or return.

Each child or education goal is usually clearer as a separate calculation because the goal date, present cost and saved amount may be different.

About this result: The result uses the numbers and assumptions you enter. It is an estimate, not a prediction.
